Bronze Cylinder Brushes
In manufacturing, wide face brushing of a substrate or cleaning of conveyors is done with bronze wire cylinder brushes. Spiral-wound bronze cylinder brushes are specially created to satisfy customer’s needs. Bronze cylinder brushes are also used in paddle wheel-style bronze conveyor cleaning brushes, which provide a customer-refillable brush core.
Polyester Cylinder Brushes
When polypropylene or nylon is not appropriate for the environment or application, a polyester filament can be used in cylinder brushes. Due to its slower water absorption rate, polyester is more rigid in the wet state than nylon but less stiff than polypropylene in the dry state. Polyester and nylon both have a higher melting and softening point and better memory or bend recovery than polypropylene. Polyester outperforms nylons and polypropylene when it comes to the propensity to lose physical qualities over time at high temperatures. While more expensive than polypropylene filaments, polyester is less expensive than nylons. FDA-approved variants of polyester that can be used in food contact can be ordered specifically.
Cylinder brushes made of polyester outperform nylons in terms of resistance to moderately strong acids. Nylon 6.12 exhibits excellent resistance when exposed to certain substances, such as acetone, benzene, ethyl acetate, hydrocarbons, methyl ketones, potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, and toluene.
Brass Wire Cylinder Brushes
Compared to comparable brushes loaded with steel or stainless steel wire, brass wire cylinder brushes are softer and provide a brushing action that won't harm harder metals. Alloy 260, which makes up brass wire, comprises 30% zinc and 70% copper. Brass wire can be the best option when the workpiece is either brass or copper. Brass and bronze wire can be used in hazardous areas since they won't spark when struck against other metallic surfaces. When placed into a brass, steel, or stainless steel channel backing, brass wire, a good electrical energy conductor (28% IACS), is suited for static reduction applications. Brass wire is suitable for operating conditions with steady temperatures up to 300°F. Additionally, brass wire cylinder brushes have a high level of corrosion resistance.
Nylon Cylinder Brushes
Brushes with nylon filling are frequently used in various applications to scrub, dust, and clean transported items or conveyor belts. Plating procedures, timber mills, block and brick manufacture, and other conveyor cleaning applications are a few examples of popular applications. Cylindrical nylon brushes are well suited for use in weak acids. They have good abrasion resistance, low to moderate water absorption (3% to 9%), excellent bend recovery, and resistance to most common solvents.
Nylon Cylinder Brush Applications and Physical Properties
While nylon 6.6 is a medium grade filament suited for most dry industrial applications, nylon 6-12 is certified for use in cylinder brush applications with direct food contact. Nylon 6.6 is the standard duty filament used by Spiral Brushes Inc. for most industrial cylinder brush applications. Nylon 6.6 absorbs moisture at a rate of 9%, which is higher than nylon 6.12's rate of 8%. Therefore, exposure to moist environments causes it to lose almost half its rigidity. As a result, nylon 6.6 only offers sporadic resistance to a variety of typical chemicals.
Mounting Options for Cylinder Brushes
Shaft: A solid or tubular shaft connects to the cylinder brushes. As needed for drive purposes, keyways may be included in shafts. Metal clips affixed to the shaft can be used to secure cylindrical brushes, or be directly welded to the shaft. Brushes placed on a shaft are normally refillable as long as the shaft is in excellent shape.
Throw-Away Core: The cylinder brush can be assembled on a cost-effective thin wall tube with end bushings to be placed onto the customer’s driven shaft to make replacement simple and convenient. Order a new brush and install it in place of the old one rather than keeping a spare on hand and returning the entire worn brush for filling.
Refillable Core: The core can be manufactured from a of heavier wall tube and refilled numerous times for a longer-term, more cost-effective solution. Shafts and journals may be detachable for simple replacement, or a crucial component of the core design. The cost of recreating the shaft or core is avoided by refilling.
Unmounted Brush Refill: The loose coiled brush coil can be purchased by customers to place on their shafts or cores.
Dynamic Balancing: Dynamic balancing may be advised for cylinder brushes running at greater rates, over 350 to 500 revolutions per minute, and depending on other factors like size and weight, to lessen vibration and enhance the consistency of brushing action.
Crating: Cylinder brushes larger than a specific size may be packaged in a wooden container for transit of future refills due to weight, size, and other shipping factors. The cost of the crate is given separately, and this decision is taken at the time of brush design.
